Shot in CinemaScope and black-and-white, this film introduced the first in a series of iconic antiheroes played by Paul Newman in the 1960s. German cinematographer Eugen Schüfftan, known for Metropolis, won an Oscar for his work on The Hustler. Newman had to wait a quarter-century for his Oscar for playing Fast Eddie, awarded for his role in The Colour of Money, the sequel directed by Martin Scorsese.
