On the Sunny Side of the Street Na sončni strani ceste

Matjaž Klopčič / 1959 / 17 min / Slovene

A street artist fashions paper silhouettes for small change at Ljubljana’s Triple Bridge (Tromostovje). Shot in the heart of architect Jože Plečnik’s Ljubljana, this poetic short film debut by Matjaž Klopčič, one of the foremost voices of Slovenia’s modernist cinema, received Best Director award at Belgrade’s Short and Documentary Film Festival.

»Klopčič consolidates cosmopolitan and modernist identities in the city of Ljubljana. He begins his journey On the Sunny Side of the Street and returns, time after time, to Ljubljana the Beloved. He infuses his city in a unique light, bringing the morning mists from Ljubljana’s moors to the heart of the city, and follows the flow of the river, repeatedly returning to Tivoli Park to see if things are as they once were. But most affectionate are his soaring shots overlooking the rooftops of the city, accompanied by a’60s jazz score. Klopčič recreates his city with the medium of light.«
