This wonderful directorial debut by Paul Dano takes us to the beginning of the 1960s, to a small town in the north of the US. When the father unexpectedly loses his job, the family is put to the test. Because the father’s pride is hurt, he takes part in fighting a wild fire near the border. His wife and son suddenly remain alone and face the father’s absence each in their own way. Through the eyes of the fourteen-year-old Joe, we follow his growing up, which leads to a great realisation about the world and his own family.
