Algeria, 1954, shortly before the Algerian War:  Daru (Viggo Mortensen) is a teacher in a remote mountainous area. He is forced to bring a local farmer to the colonial court to face trial for murder. As the uprising takes root in the valley and the air thickens with hostility, they have to make the perilous journey through the Atlas Mountains.
