Only Lovers Left Alive Only Lovers Left Alive

Jim Jarmusch / United Kingdom, Germany, France / 2013 / 123 min

A vampire film in the manner of Jim Jarmusch: an antipode to Twilight and a trendy ode to global musical culture.

Adam is a depressed vampire who idly mills around his place listening to his LP collection. He lives in an old house in contemporary Detroit, where human stupidity has condemned the once resplendent cultural buildings to devastation. For centuries, Adam has been married to Eve, who lives in Morocco. They’ve lived through all the landmark events of the past centuries of human history. Eve arrives to Detroit, but the couple’s idyll is soon disrupted by her wild and uncontrollable younger sister Ava. Her arrival heightens the need for fresh blood, while the clandestine collective of vampires is becoming increasingly beleaguered by primitive species lovingly named »the zombies«.

»This is a love story, but also the story of two exceptional outsiders who, given their unusual circumstances, have a vast overview of human and natural history, including stunning achievements and tragic and brutal failures. Adam and Eve are themselves metaphors for the present state of human life – they are fragile and endangered, susceptible to natural forces, and to the short-sighted behaviour of those in power.«

The second feature film from Hana Jušić (Quit Staring at My Plate) is a darkly poetic neo-Western about a mysterious Chilean woman who brings unrest to a traditional Croatian shepherding community at the beginning of the 20th century. Blending elements of Wuthering Heights, Croatian folklore, and Jane Campion’s The Piano, the film earned its two leading actresses an award at Locarno.
