Vic+Flo Saw a Bear Vic+Flo ont vu un ours

Denis Côté / Canada / 2013 / 90 min

Featuring a miscellanea of eccentric characters, the latest film by Denis Côté creates an imaginary world of unpredictable, singular reality by combining the director’s bizarre contrivances with a mysterious atmosphere.

A story of Vic, a woman who has just been released from prison and who is on the hunt for some peace and quiet. She moves into a house in the Canadian forest and receives a visit from her lover, Flo. The two of them take each day as it comes, exploring the countryside in a golf cart and enjoying the scenery. Life could be so wonderful – if only Vic’s rather unconventional probation officer wouldn’t keep turning up. A friendly woman in the neighbourhood soon turns out to be a shadow from the past; signs of impending threat begin to multiply and even the forest seems to have treacherous traps in store.

“There’s always an animal somewhere in my films, like a mirror effect, or … I wouldn’t say symbolism or metaphor, because I don’t like that. I think it’s the easiest way to create mirror effects, because we think animals are so related to symbolism, that in the end we do it, consciously or unconsciously – they infiltrate our narrations and we just let it go.” (Denis Côté)
