Rangoon, Burma, 1917. Edward, a civil servant for the British Empire, runs away from his fiancée Molly the day she arrives to get married. During his travels that take him to Singapore, Bangkok, and China, panic gives way to melancholy. Contemplating the emptiness of his existence, the cowardly Edward wonders what has become of Molly… Determined to get married and amused by Edward’s move, Molly follows his trail on this Asian grand tour. By then Molly seems lost as well, suffering from a fatal malady and unsure if she’ll see her future husband again.

"There are several grands tours in this film. There is the geographic tour seen in the images of contemporary Asia, matching the tour followed by the characters in an imaginary Asia filmed in the studio. There is the emotional grand tour experienced in different ways by Edward and Molly /.../. Above all there is this immense tour that unites what is divided – countries, genders, times, reality and the imaginary, the world and the cinema. More than anything I want to invite those who view the film to take this last grand tour. I think this is what cinema is all about." (Miguel Gomes)
