Gu Wentong is a divorced food critic. Owing to an incident that destroyed his family, he has not had any contact with his father since he was a child. One day, he learns that his father lives alone in a coastal town north-east of Beijing. Still bearing a large grudge, Wentong is reluctant to visit his “disgraced” father. In the meantime, he begins a relationship with a young photographer, Ouyang. They often meet in the area near the White Pagoda and visit local restaurants together. She inspires Wentong to reconsider his roles in life as a father, son and lover.
“This tower really exists, and is truly magnificent. The special architectural design of the huge White Pagoda makes it hard to see its shadow. When you live nearby you are affected by it. It would have an impact on your life, on your emotions. This is the role of the tower.” (Zhang Lu)
